The world-famous Maasai Mara is under siege—land grabbers are stealing our heritage. Stand with us to defend Olkiombo, a vital part of the Reserve that belongs to the PEOPLE, not private interests!
For generations, Olkiombo has been part of the Maasai Mara ecosystem, a protected national reserve under Kenyan law. Recent reports suggest attempts to illegally privatize portions of this land, threatening both community rights and conservation efforts
In 1984, land was hived off from the Maasai Mara National Reserve through Gazette Notice No. 145. In 1997, Kunini claimed allocation of Title No. Cis Mara/Talek/155. County Council officials asserted that the allocation was illegal and unconstitutional. They maintained the land was not part of the area removed from the reserve. They further stated that the title was introduced after the adjudication register had been closed.
In 1997, the County Council of Narok maintained that the disputed land was unlawfully created and declared it a nullity. In 2000, Kunini filed a case in the High Court to claim the land. The County Council opposed the claim. In 2002, a consent judgment was entered granting the land to Kunini. This agreement bound both parties and concluded the initial phase of the dispute.
After 2007, a new County Council sought to overturn the 2002 consent judgment. The council argued that the agreement had been entered into without proper authority. In March 2014, the High Court set aside the consent judgment. The court held that the legality of Kunini’s title must be determined in the public interest.
Up until this point, the Ministry of Lands had cancelled the title in Kunini’s name, and he had been prosecuted for fraud and acquitted. The Court of Appeal delivered its judgment in 2015, followed by the Supreme Court in 2018, and the Environment and Land Court in 2025.
